Development programme for building 23

Building 23 is an iconic education and research facility on the TU Delft Campus and is home to, among others, the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CiTG). Through the Building 23 Integrated Maintenance Programme, TU Delft is investing in the preservation of this landmark building while providing a safe, comfortable and sustainable environment for learning and research. The programme will ensure that the building remains fit for education and research for at least the next 30 years.

The programme consists of a series of interconnected sub-projects. Given the size and complexity of the building (approximately 65,000 m²), the work will be carried out in phases, organised by building section and floor. This phased approach makes the project more manageable, minimises disruption for building users and provides the flexibility to align the work with the financial framework of the Campus Strategy.

Sub-projects

Sub-project 1 – Renovation of the first floor of CEG

The first sub-project is currently under way and focuses on the renovation of the first floor of Building 23. Following decades of intensive use and a series of alterations, this centrally located floor was due for renewal. It is being transformed into a future-proof, sustainable and welcoming student hub that will serve as the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences’ showcase. Sub-project 2 – Climate systems and building maintenance (main building, floors 2–6)

Sub-project 2 is the first project within the main building and serves as a pilot and learning project for the subsequent phases. The works are aimed at improving comfort, safety and sustainability and include:

• Insulating the façades and replacing external window frames;
• Installing new ventilation systems or replacing existing systems where required;
• Maintaining and upgrading the electrical infrastructure;
• Replacing the existing lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting;
• Carrying out maintenance on various building services and installations;

Construction work is currently scheduled to begin in late 2027. Further information about this sub-project will follow.
