Construction of the central medium-voltage substation at Campus South

TU Delft Campus is working towards a future-proof energy supply through the construction of a new central medium-voltage substation at Campus South. This substation will play an important role in the reliable and efficient distribution of electricity across the campus and will support TU Delft’s growing energy demand. The new central substation will prepare the campus for future developments, including new buildings and large-scale research infrastructure.

What is a medium-voltage substation?

A medium-voltage substation connects the campus to the electricity grid and distributes electricity to the various buildings and facilities across the campus. Within the substation, the supplied electricity is converted to the voltage level used in TU Delft buildings. As such, the substation forms an essential part of the campus energy supply.

Why is a new medium-voltage substation needed?

The demand for electrical capacity at TU Delft Campus has increased significantly in recent years and is expected to continue growing in the years ahead. This growth is driven in part by planned developments at Campus South and the expansion of research facilities.

To ensure a reliable electricity supply in the future, a new central medium-voltage substation will be constructed. The substation will become a key component of the campus’s future energy infrastructure. Existing substations on campus will remain operational and, once the new substation is commissioned, will function as intermediate substations within the campus electricity network.

Impact on the surroundings

All activities will take place within the construction site boundaries. As a result, the impact on the surrounding area is expected to remain limited, with minimal disruption anticipated for traffic, cyclists and pedestrians.
